There are four parts in the ability to decide about medical research:

1. Understanding the purpose, rationale, and procedures of the research, as well as any risks and benefits. 

2. Recognizing the ways participation in research will directly impact the person. 

3. Balancing the risks and benefits and logical decision-making.

4. Making a free choice.
