PARTICIPANTS' ROLE

Your Role

Here are the key things we asked participants to do during your participation in this project:

CONSENT

Participants were asked to provide their consent to participate in the study. A research staff member spoke with them about all the study elements, so they understood what they were agreeing to do.

Some key points:

  • Participants agreed to be audio and video recorded on Zoom so we can make a record of people’s opinions and comments during the sessions. No one outside of the study team is able to hear or see the recording. Recordings will be deleted as soon as the typed record of comments is complete.

  • The comments and key ideas that come from the sessions will be published in scientific reports. However, names will never be used in these publications. Their privacy is protected.

PREPARE

Before each session, participants had to review some information about the topics for discussion. All of the information is located on the website, under Prepare for Each Session. There are also short quizzes about the material. We asked participants to complete these quizzes so we can understand how well we presented the information on this website. Those who completed the quizzes received a small incentive in addition to their session participation incentives.

COMPLETE SURVEYS

Participants filled out two surveys about their opinions on minor consent to research—one before the first deliberation session, and one after the final session.

PARTICIPATE

Participants attended four 2-hour deliberation sessions on Zoom. By participating, they provided their input, considered others’ opinions, and talked together to come up with new recommendations around minor consent in research. These sessions occur once weekly for four weeks.
